About the artist:
Johannes Ludovicus Gerardus (‘Jan’) Kuhr 1919 – Eindhoven – 1996 Jan Kuhr was born in 1919 in Eindhoven. His father, Willem Kuhr, already painted cinema posters for the Rembrandt Theater on Vrijstraat. Jan often helped his father and eventually decided to pursue an education at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam. After his studies, he returned to Eindhoven and became very active in the social and cultural life of his hometown. Kuhr painted, drew, and made linocuts in an expressionistic style. He gained the most recognition for his exuberant everyday (genre) scenes of fairs, circuses, guild and carnival celebrations, and processions. As a result, he is sometimes referred to as a ‘chronicler of life’ or ‘painter of celebration and play.’ In 1999, an overview exhibition of his work was organized at the Center for the Arts Eindhoven.
