Dukkers received his education at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam and was largely self-taught as a painter. He worked as a painter, draftsman, and lithographer. Initially, he worked in Zandvoort, but from 1940 he settled in Amsterdam. In 1946, he was selected by Willem Sandberg, director of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, for the exhibition Ten Young Painters, which also included Karel Appel, Corneille, and Rooskens.
As with many artists of his generation, expressionist tendencies are visible in Dukkers’ early work, but he soon developed his own entirely unique course. Literary and surrealistic themes became dominant, with death, eroticism, and rituals closely intertwined.
