Very rare, hard to find chair with arm rests, model A R, design by Hermann Friedrich Mertens (1885-1960) for UMS Pastoe in collaboration with HOPMI in 1932.
HOPMI stands for Hollandsche Patent Metaal Industrie. From 1932 to 1934, HOPMI worked with UMS Pastoe on the production of a series of tubular furniture which was easy to disassemble and ship. HOPMI chairs were in the 1930s the first and only demountable tubular steel furniture.
In 1934, Gerrit Rietveld also designed a chair for Hopmi.
The chair is very comfortable. Paint and chrome in an original condition. Frame has patina but chrome is not detaching, nor has it been painted or otherwise been touched.
