Theo MACKAAY (Utrecht 1950)
Painter, Sculptor, Musician
Theo Mackaay trained at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and later the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, where he took monumental classes.
Mackaay’s work is characterized by classical archetypes, often of animals, warriors, or women, which he reworks into deformed figures that thus transcend realistic forms. This does not mean, however, that he hasn’t created realistic, conventional sculptures.
His most famous sculpture is perhaps the Golden Calf. He designed this film award and, for decades, has been one of the most famous sculptures in the Netherlands, as it is presented annually.
His classical training remains clearly visible in Theo Mackaay’s work, which is currently becoming increasingly monumental. He has large works in various European cities. Theo works from his studios in the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, and Spain.
